Spotlight on Women Filmmakers

Women have been making movies since the beginning; Alice Guy's career as a filmmaker began in 1894 when she was a secretary. While they continue to be a minority among directors, women have undeniably shaped the art form throughout it's history, with early trailblazers like Guy, Ida Lupino, and Shirley Clarke paving the way for subsequent generations. Although we hope for a day when we no longer differentiate between "directors" and "female directors", we nonetheless pay tribute to a diverse group of women filmmakers in this week's Spotlight .
