Spotlight on Russian Cinema

Revolution can be an overused hyperbole. But was a political movement ever harnessed as well as after October (November, on Western calendars) 1917, when Russia's montage theorists advanced film art? Sadly, as state control quieted the cinematic voice, the country seemed little more than point of origin for Cold War spies, Bond baddies, and emotionless boxers. Still, some masters managed to work with restrictions, carrying traditions through to perestroika and the resurgence seen today. Revolution can simply mean: it comes back around.
