For a director, the best way to communicate a theme, or feeling, or emotion is not always through plot or dialogue, but through the sounds they imbue into their films. Guillermo del Toro seems to take particular care and joy in the sounds the glitter throughout his movies – a squelch to stimulate discomfort; the crash and clang of exploding metal to exhilarate; a tap, tap, tap to provoke anticipation and even fear. Del Toro, like few other directors, is a master of using the smallest sounds to communicate loudly to his audience.
