The Problem with Video Game Movies
From "Super Mario Bros." to "Lara Croft," we got ninety-nine problems, but the IP ain’t one.
Why is it that movies based on video games never really live up to their source material? Plenty of movies that take on popular properties are able to please both critics and fans while simultaneously shattering box office records. Just look at the Marvel Studios movies. But video game movies? They’re a different story. To date, no movie based on a video game has scored over 50% on Rotten Tomatoes. So, what’s the issue? Is it that video game movies don't translate to the screen? Is there too much plot to condense everything into just one movie? Or, is there a fundamental flaw in the filmmaking behind these movies?
