We all know what a flashback is, but what makes a meta-flashback? It’s a unique technique that can be found in esoteric art films and Austin Powers in Goldmember alike, and it’s a handy way of creating a believable past by using footage from an actor’s past work. “Meta”, after all, is just another way to say “see what we did there?” This video essay examines examples of filmmakers who “remix” the footage from other movies to create a visual representation of their own character’s memories.
