Superheroes: Breaking Genre
What if John Hughes directed Spider-Man?
Superhero films have become synonymous with summer and many of us are feeling the fatigue of CGI’d, underwear-on-the-outside, spandex clad heroes and villains. So how are filmmakers starting to play with superhero tropes to make what was stale feel new? The answer is, by adding and mixing genres. By making Thor a comedy or Logan a Western it reinvigorates the characters we have begun to feel inured to and allows the actors playing these characters to add range and depth to their performances beyond punching a CGI monster.
