When did you first discover Sandra Bullock? Maybe that’s a difficult question for some, but it’s a relatively easy one for me. In 1993, I distinctly remember noticing her in Demolition Man alongside Sylvester Stallone and Wesley Snipes. Given her impressive 90s filmography, Bullock became more than just a movie star–she was (and remains) a cultural icon. Thanks to her natural charm and unique performance style, she is a perfect fit for everything from serious dramas to romantic comedies and fluffy action flicks. Many popular 90s actors and actresses didn’t adjust well to 21st century cinema, but Bullock not only managed to reinvent herself, but also continued to land A-list roles, and even won an Academy Award for her performance in The Blind Side. There aren’t many roles that she can’t take on; she could probably have even been a silent film star. Who knows? Maybe someday she will be. Until then, let’s celebrate all that she’s achieved so far, and look forward to what lies ahead.

We can’t wait to see Sandra in the upcoming Ocean’s 8. In the meantime, check out our previous installment of Icons & Outliers, in which we take a look at the career of Jim Carrey, or dive into the filmography of Sandra’s Speed co-star, Keanu Reeves.
