With the premiere of Golden Exits at Sundance this year, writer-director Alex Ross Perry presumably continues his unique exploration of smart-ass characters in independent cinema. Serving a proud tradition popularized by neurotic, overly intellectual characters like those of Woody Allen, Perry's narratives seem wholly concerned with the plights of jerks—and he develops his relentless curiosity with great craftsmanship and distinction. As with all great smart-asses, no matter how frustrating he is, we simply cannot look away.
