The Help is a difficult movie to classify, since it’s tough to watch for its frank depictions of racism within southern gentility—while also showcasing tremendous acting talent. Being a story set in the south during the 1960s, there’s a ton of mouth-watering food all over the place. In this episode of Film To Table, filmmaker Rodger Melvin joins chef Jason Roberts to recreate Minny’s fried chicken recipe—complete with a paper bag for breading the chicken pieces. They also discuss how food preparation and presentation plays into the larger social and racial dynamics of the film—serving to cover up blemishes that are brought to the surface over the course of the movie as tensions rise.
