Color By Numbers: Brian De Palma
This famed director inspires comparisons to Hitchcock while forging his own path.
Brian De Palma draws a lot of inspiration from Alfred Hitchcock. And like his legendary peer, De Palma uses color to evoke more than just the setting of his films. He will assign color to characters or scenes. As the film progresses the audience learns to associate certain colors to their assignments. In this way, when he decides to alter those color motifs it creates a meaning deeper than a costume change or a change of scenery. These colors come to stand for transformation, transference, death, madness – powerful themes made possible by director’s Hitchcockian use of color.
