In honor of Bike to Work Day, we take a look at how the bicycle has forever been an essential for movie characters: We’ve seen romantic bike rides, childhood capers and introspective bike journeys. Even off-screen, bicycle-powered projectors are an emerging staple in environmental film festivals. But can the bike symbolize something even more specific on screen? In this video, we look at four films and how they use the bicycle as a specific vehicle for freedom and justice against oppression. Using such a universal symbol resonates with us an audience, and we come to understand how something to simple can become a source of liberation.
