Adapted by Charles Burnett from a short story he had written, this lyrical short film is a meditation on race relations and a coming-of-age story. On and around the porch of an abandoned, disintegrating farmhouse, a group of white men and a young black boy sit vigil over a horse the day it's to be put to death by the boy's father. Although it was shot in Northern California, Burnett has called this a "kind of allegory about the South."
