One of the more surprising developments in 1960s commercial cinema was the emergence of European (mostly Italian and Spanish) "oaters." They briefly revived the genre by adding ramped-up violence, a minimalist style and modern cynicism to the old “cowboy, Indian and outlaw” formula. Simultaneously, American Westerns were losing their longtime box office allure.
