Vietnam War
see all genres ›No war had so bitterly split the American public on moral grounds before Vietnam (known as "the American War" to the Vietnamese), a seemingly endless fight against Communist forces that was inherited from the French and finally ground to an inglorious halt after the fall of Saigon in 1975. Opposition to the effort was a huge factor in the growth of the 1960s youth counterculture both here and abroad. Coinciding with the youth of innumerable emerging filmmakers, the Vietnam War has been a frequent subject, context or reference point onscreen ever since.
