A "golden age" for this Asian nation's cinema was brutally ended by the Khmer Rouge, whose five-year reign of terror included destroying much of Cambodia's film history, imprisoning and/or murdering many of its leading talents and limiting new production to propaganda. Since that infamous regime's fall in 1979, the industry has slowly rebuilt itself with particular emphasis on horror and romance stories. The country's physical beauty has also attracted location shoots by numerous foreign filmmakers.
