Film-Drunk Critics Pick Favorites at True/False 2014

Imbibe in our enthusiastic impressions.

‘The Vanquishing of the Witch Baba Yaga’

Last weekend marked another outstanding edition of the True/False Film Fest, one of the wildest and wonderfullest moviegoing experiences to be had in the world. For four days, downtown Columbia, Missouri, transforms into a cinematic carnival, where fact meets fiction in some of the most riveting and innovative documentary work of the moment.

At the highwater mark of the festival, fellow critics Michael Sicinski, Vadim Rizov and Tim Grierson and I adjourned to the Broadway Brewery, where we disclosed our favorite films of the festival amidst an tabletop of alcoholic libations straight out of a Hong Sang-soo drinking scene. But just in case any current or potential employers are nervously regarding this video, let me assure them that the multi-bottled mise-en-scene is PURELY symbolic: a metaphor for the state of cinematic intoxication in which we found ourselves at True/False.

If we really were drunk, then that would make our articulate endorsements on behalf of our favorite films all the more impressive: Michael Sicinski praises Jessica Oreck‘s fabulistic The Vanquishing of the Witch Baba Yaga, Vadim Rizov is stirred by Jaap van Hoewijk’s incendiary Killing Time, Tim Grierson indulges in Stephanie Spray and Pacho Velez‘s meditative Manakamana and I am left starry-eyed by Jodie Mack‘s Dusty Stacks of Mom. Imbibe in our enthusiastic impressions:

I would also like to thank the kind server at the Broadway Brewery who graciously served as extemporaneous camera operator during our convo. I was too (film) drunk at the moment to take down her name, but would certainly like to credit her contribution.
