Zero Motivation2014

  • 3.9
A unique, sharply observed, sometimes dark and often hilarious portrait of everyday life for a unit of young, female soldiers in a remote Israeli desert outpost. Playing out like M*A*S*H meets ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK, Talya Lavie's brilliant debut details the power struggles of three women with different agendas and very little to do. Pencil-pushers in the Human Resources Office, best friends Zohar and Daffi spend their time playing video games, singing pop songs, jousting with stationery and dreaming of Tel Aviv, while their senior officer, Rama, quixotically aspires to achieve a significant military career. With shifts of tone that go from slapstick to satiric to horrifying with fluid ease, and with a superb supporting cast of characters, ZERO MOTIVATION is sure to take its place on any list of the most memorable workplace comedies.

This film is what I love about Fandor. Anywhere else, I would have dismissed it as a chick-flick. Here, I decided to give it 20 minutes.

A pleasant journey into the live's of Isreali army recruits. How to true to life it is I don't know. The story revolves around two main characters, or three if you include the officer, and focuses on their needs and wants and how those needs and wants are met (or not). The acting is superb throughout, and it is beautifully shot. If you're looking for a Saving Private Ryan or Full Metal Jacket then this is definitely not it, but if you're after an insightful film about people it is well worth watching.

Again a film that would not download.
