Guy is trying to live a simple life during World War II. He resides in a small farmhouse outside a sleepy village in France. He has almost no friends. One day he stumbles across Rolf, an injured German soldier. Guy brings Rolf home and nurses him back to health. While convalescing, a relationship slowly builds between the two men. They frolic naked in the woods and swim in the stream. Thin, boyish Guy is a contrast to the blond, hard-bodied Rolf. A passion stirs between the two young men. Their lives intertwine, each happy to be sheltered until the war asserts itself back into their lives. A celebrated film, though the source materials, (and, thus, the picture quality) are less than ideal, unfortunately.

ive seen a lot of gay love stories but this is the saddest if thats what it was aiming for then its a success the characters are fine tuned and the two guys seen to have a real chemistry for me the girl is out of place she doesnt belong in the film i would give this traggic drama 4 stars

I expect this movie was groundbreaking when initially released. For 1979, the gay content is amazing. Compared to contemporary gay movies, it might be considered restrained, but for 1979? Amazing. It must have been truly trailblazing. The story line is a bit odd, but it's a French film. I watched it to the end.

A complicated friendship and an exploration of the depths of love, utility, and hate. Have a bottle of wine and a few close friends on hand for this one.

One must see this movie to fully appreciate the off-beat script and outstanding camera work. Difficult to write a review without spoiling the underlying aspects of the the human psyche portrayed. Simply beautiful in showing the relationship between two masculine men.

Bizarre movie

It's been some time since I viewed this movie, but what I recall, I thought it was a bromance relationship torn apart by the realities of war and all that it ensues ! The main characters did an excellent job in portraying that relationship, realistically! It is well worth renting it.

A sweet movie. The far-fetched conceit -- French guy saves, hides and deeply befriends a wounded German soldier during the occupation -- works if you accept that Guy, the main character, is mentally ill (in an undefined way) that makes him able to respond in unexpected ways to another human being and to act on those feelings. The dynamics between Guy, his girlfriend, and the soldier are interesting. Her character is less clear thematically, but her presence gives the story another level of tension and meaning. The ending is worth waiting for.

Powerful, emotional.

This is a very complex story on many levels, and told via the well presented portrayals of all the characters, including "le chien Tommy."

Well done, I kept hoping for things to be different but that is life in a nutshell!

A beautiful movie. Both actors made themselves very endearing.

It was too weird for me but Rolf is a hottie so I guess I'll give it two stars.

It is all there: The fear, the love, the passion, the grief - filtered through the mist of mental illness. Well worth watching

Sick movie. Slaughtering of animals not entertainment. Leading young man over the top acting and bad. Rest of cast was okay. Blonde soldier did best her could opposite a bad actor.

Guy was so innocently beautiful. The blond so goldenly beautiful. I don't think I understand how it ended. Looked like the girl betrayed them but immediately before that it looked like she loved them both and they were gonna be a happy threesome. But guy shot the one he loved. I was reminded of the words of Oscar Wilde: "Yet each man kills the thing he loves...."
I hope I live long enuf to see happy endings to gay films. But ultimately, life has NO happy endings. I am reminded also of the Robert Frost poem, NOTHING GOLD CAN STAY
Nature's first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf's a flower,
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief.
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay.

The Relation of love during a war torn Europe . I review this movie again . finding your soul mate. and having to destroy him. All for the gift of love. for the loss of not being able to have that love. The Drama of this movie I am sure was true in this fiction story . As many of the French covered for their Stray enemies , Again in the end the Lover ends up alone , and for the rest of his life haunted, By the Loss he had to provide for The German enemy , he sheltered loved Deeply, But Knew he would be taken away in the end , So He ended it him self. Sad Drama . They Loved each other. I am sure this story has happened many of times when this war of Hitlers was going on . We just never heard about it because It was another Hidden secret sheltered from the World. Homosexuality was just as strong then as it is today . People just did not talk about it because of the fear it would bring them from their own people. when is it ever going to end . Things are better today for our Gay Military. I just wonder if it is better for the German English and many of the other countries . 3 thumbs up I loved this movie . It made me cry .
