This was a television commercial that used to run frequently in the early to mid-1970's. I was a teenager at the time and the theme song still sometimes runs through my head. The subject matter was controversial at the time but the commercial manages to avoid being salacious or clinical, opting instead for a strange combination of humor ("VD is for everybody, not just for the few. Any one can share VD, with someone nice. . . like you") and melancholy. It's nice to see it remembered.

"If you're curious or confused...," the voice-over begins at the end. You will be: the wholesome, smiling faces featured here seem like advertisements for genital warts, painful discharges, sterility, and all the other unpleasant things associated with VD. "Venereal," of course, derives from "Venus," the Roman goddess of love. And doesn't the world need more love? Plus, the accompanying music is much catchier than Miley Cyrus (or whoever else is selling the stuff these days).
Wow. The Ad Council really went for the jugular in this PSA. Smiling, happy people oblivious to the ravages of venereal disease. This one ranks up there with the "Crying Indian" litter PSA for effectiveness.
If VD is this fun, sign me up.

It was an interesting short film. I wish it had been longer.
