Tribulation 991991

  • 4.0
Upon its release in 1991, TRIBULATION 99 became an instant counter-culture classic. Craig Baldwin’s “pseudo-pseudodocumentary” presents a factual chronicle of U.S. intervention in Latin America in the form of the ultimate far-right conspiracy theory, combining covert action, environmental catastrophe, space aliens, cattle mutilations, killer bees, religious prophecy, doomsday diatribes and just about every other crackpot theory broadcast through the dentures of the modern paranoiac.

The piecing together of a whole slew of films to make a trippy, paranoid fantasy is what Craig Baldwin excels at. And he leavens the proceedings with just enough fact to make you wonder...

I remember reading about this movie in Film Threat back in '91, but somehow I missed seeing it then. For those of use who remember the end times (AKA the Reagan/ Bush years), it has a special poignancy. How shall I put this? Baldwin's film is a work of f***ing genius, a fun-house mirror / parallel universe history of American skull-duggery and political violence in Latin America disguised as right-wing conspiracy mongering. Visually stunning, Baldwin's collection of found and stock footage from more sources than I can possibly identify is brilliant, and his deadpan, just-on-this-side-of-hystreria narration very funny. My favorite line is about the Contras needing all those American weapons and explosives for their righteous fight against "literacy teachers and agricultural experts." This is skull beneath the smile satire of the best kind.

This is a must-see piece of underground American culture. Craig Baldwin's idiosyncratic vision is expressed via a paranoid, whispered narration over a very clever mash up of sci-fi and horror films with newsreels and footage of Reagan-era foreign policy blunders. This is DIY culture jamming at it's best.

Actually the "Great Tribulation" warned of in the Bible, by Jesus, Has not yet begun, Scheduled to begin in May of 2013. As most of the true followers of the true GOD creator of the heavens, earth, and sea, and all life there within know; God's timetables are different than that of human kind and marked by HIS Holy days, which HE gave to us. These events which marked the Holy days, were but a shadow of the things yet to come. If one wants to know, the things of the earth. One must study the things of the earth's creator.

Brilliant, insane, a perfect black mirror.
