An uncompromising revenge thriller of operatic scope, THE WORLD OF KANAKO is a non-stop visual and emotional assault to the senses as it follows troubled ex-detective Akikazu on the hunt for his missing teenage daughter, Kanako. What he discovers in his search is an unsettling and harrowing web of depravity, surrounding both Kanako and himself. He finds himself woefully unprepared for the revelations that affect all he holds dear.

"...kind of like taking some bad acid and mainlining Seijun Suzuki's greatest hits while being battered about the face and neck by a gang of yakuza thugs rolling hard on equally awful ecstasy." - Marc Savlov, Austin Chronicle

Expertly crafted, clever, surprising, darkly comical and unrelenting in the pursuit of pushing the envelope off the table and out the door -- "The World of Kanako" is addictive and impossibly entertaining. I didn't want to like it, but I love every energy soaked moment. This twisted mind-fuck of a movie must be seen to be believed. No matter how I look at it, "The World of Kanako" is a cruel little movie that is essentially impossible not to admire.

Oh boy this makes Tarantino feel like Chuck Schulz. The tone is moderated enough that it isn't just ultra-violent but occasionally thoughtful. Even philosophical. Not sure a movie like this would be made in the US because this movie is consumed in it's ugliness (while somehow STILL being highly entertaining!) and we need our heroes. There are none here.

Detective Aikawa is one tough guy! He takes a mental and physical beating in search of his daughter. Filled with flashbacks and flash editing this is not your run of the mill noir detective film.

NakashimaD: "You know that movie, Fire Walk With Me? Let's make a frustrating knock-off."

That was a bit harsh. Honestly, I liked the first 1/3 of the movie quite a bit. This was largely due to Yakusho Koji's great acting. If you haven't seen him in Kurosawa Kiyoshi's "Cure," definitely add it to your list.

But Nakashima's directing style gets old real fast. The film clocks in at barely under two hours and, as is the director's style, stuffed to the gills with smash cuts and shaky cam.

It was Good! Two thumbs up!

This film is far out. If you take the trip, you will watch to the very end. I like it.
