The first collaborative effort of the legendary Arrows---Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger—is a stylish tale of suspense and intrigue in the tradition of “The 39 Steps” and the “Lady Vanishes.” Powell and Pressburger give Hitchcock a run for his money, and Conrad Veidt is a compelling and magnetic anti-hero. There are times you find yourself rooting for Conrad, but then you remember that it’s 1939 and the storm clouds of war are quickly rolling over Europe. Powell and Pressburger toy with pre-war anxieties in a very unique picture and entertaining motion picture…but that can be said of all their films.

Trivia Time: 1930’s leading man Sebastian Shaw is probably better remembered by modern audiences as the first actor to play Annakin Skywalker in the original release of “Return of the Jedi” in 1983.

Of its type: wonderful! And so funny to start with 'German' navy officers in a German hotel all speaking with Oxbridge accents! Was Conrad Voight the only German in the British film industry at the time?!
