Víctor Erice’s spellbinding THE SPIRIT OF THE BEEHIVE is widely regarded as the greatest Spanish film of the 1970s. In a small Castilian village in 1940, in the wake of the country's devastating civil war, six-year-old Ana attends a traveling movie show of Frankenstein and becomes possessed by the memory of it. Produced as Franco's long regime was nearing its end, THE SPIRIT OF THE BEEHIVE is a bewitching portrait of a child's haunted inner life and one of the most visually arresting movies ever made.

Mysterious,spare and well acted by tiny people. Quiet with a haunting sound track this is a true work of art.

Ana Torrent - Ana is totally amazing & wonderful_it's a beautiful magic film_i always get nervous when kids are threatened or hurt in film_this one made me uneasy_but it's really magic & all Frankenstein's fault_& it's all beautifully done
And here I thought Jaws (1975) left a lasting impression on me as a kid. Frankenstein left his mark just as Erice has elegantly etched this in time.
