Andrei Tarkovsky, the acclaimed master of Soviet cinema, takes a moving and personal turn with this striking meditation on life in Russia during the bleak days of WWII. THE MIRROR is not just the display of a film director at the peak of his unique powers. As an homage to the innocence of childhood, it tells an enigmatic tale that is both gripping and horrifying. Tarkovsky uses his own coming-of-age experiences, himself "mirror"-ed, to convey the mood and action that dominated a country ravaged by war. Through a fascinating two-tiered time frame, the director blends his own harsh childhood with an adult life that is troubled and broken. Powerful images (a mother faced with political terror, a divorcing couple's quarrel) are underscored by Tarkovsky's masterful manipulation of film stocks and recorded sound. THE MIRROR becomes a stream-of-consciousness, nostalgic visions of childhood mixed with slow-motion dream sequences and stark WWII newsreels. Tarkovsky's THE MIRROR is ultimately as much a window through the filmmaker's gaze as it is a reflection of his personal passions and ideals. Through this essential film, viewers may find the puzzles that provide the key to the director's other works, including THE SACRIFICE and SOLARIS.

Mirror is a hypnotic exploration of self, brimming with the vivid impressions and ephemeral memories which compose our consciousness. It is, at once filled, with a voracious love for life and soaked in deep intractable melancholy. Mirror is a portrait of bruised and battered sadness resulting from an eternity of struggle: for love, acceptance, meaning and identity. It could be said, and Tarkovsky has, that this form of unique cinema is what the art should strive for. This film glides through the spirit with utter grace and stirs the leaves of your soul like a heavy wind.

I can honestly say I've never seen a film like this before in my life. Watching it was like time travel into someone's psyche. And it's so skillfully done that, despite the abstraction, non-linear narrative and chopped-up characters, it is completely compelling. It keeps the viewer engrossed just as a dream engrosses a dreamer. The film is about Tarkovsky's psyche and it is also about the others who helped make the film (as I read in a related article), and it is also about any viewer. This disproves that someone else's description of a dream is always boring, and perhaps proves that film is the best medium available today for recreating dream logic.

The trick to watching this masterpiece is to pretend you are dreaming and definitely do not try to make sense of it or even pay any attention to the subtitles, they take away from the visuals, which is all you need. Stream-of-consciousness...
