A young family moves from their cramped New York City apartment to a spacious new home in New England. But this is no ordinary house in the country: the previous owner was the dereanged Dr. Freudstein, whose monstrous human experiments have left a legacy of bloody mayhem. Now, someone (or something) is alive in the basement, and home sweet home is about to become a horrific hell on earth.

One of Fulci's best! When I saw this film year's ago, it left an indelible impression on me. It still shocks and scares in the 21st century. A Must See for horror fans!

One of Fulci's best! When I saw this film year's ago, it left an indelible impression on me. It still shocks and scares in the 21st century. A Must See for horror fans!

The House by the Cemetery (Italian: Quella villa accanto al cimitero) is a 1981 Italian supernatural horror film directed by Lucio Fulci. The film stars Catriona MacColl, Paolo Malco, Ania Pieroni, Giovanni Frezza, Silvia Collatina and Dagmar Lassander. It is the third instalment of the unofficial Gates of Hell trilogy which also includes City of the Living Dead and The Beyond. Its plot revolves around a series of murders taking place in a New England home–a home which happens to be hiding a particularly gruesome secret within its basement walls. Themes and motifs from popular horror films such as The Shining, The Amityville Horror and Frankenstein are readily on display. This movie made the infamous video nasty list in the United Kingdom.

3 ½ Last half is very scary and makes-up for the slow first half. Nonsensical and excessive, but not outrageous enough for me to like this as much as some other Fulci. The kids are annoying. Still, lots of gory fun.
