The Gift of the Magi2001

  • 2.3
"One dollar and eighty-seven cents. And the next day would be Christmas." And so we begin O. Henry's best known and timeless story, which stands as a shining example of O. Henry's writing at its best. For in it we have the simplicity of concept, the irony of circumstance and the charming surprise at the end, which we won't reveal here. It's a wonderful, romantic tale of a young married couple who have little money to buy each other Christmas presents.

Wow, I'm the softest touch I know when it comes to the ease with which I can be stirred by sentiment, even the most overt manipulation will set me to blubbering–but this, the performances are just so terribly strained. So painful was it to watch in places that the only explanation seemed to be that the entire thing was done tongue-in-cheek.

Good retelling of the classic tale. Tear jerking and heart warming. Nice way to spend 17 minutes. I enjoyed it.
