I really liked this movie. The production quality was great. I still wonder how they got some of those shots of the trains. The story was a little hard to follow and I think there could have been some more character development, but over all a very good film.

Intense, raw, a russian John Henry!
4 ½ Engaging adventure vividly portrays the cold, squalor and casual brutality of late-Stalinist exile in the Siberian wilderness while rough humor and charismatic Mashkov as the monomaniacal engineer warm up the story. The photography is beautiful and stirring, especially the shots of the steam-spewing locomotives, and the scene where Ignat and Elsa build a rickety railroad bridge over a raging river is thrilling. Very fine action movie.
I thought this was a nearly great movie. It definitely has the feel of a Russian (ne' Soviet) production. The actors are rough, and the extras are obviously nothing but locals, giving it a very authentic feel, not unlike Eisenstadt's films. The storyline seems a bit far fetched (reviving a rusted steam engine, until you find out it is based on a true story. I really, really enjoyed it, and have watched it three times now. It holds up well to reviewing.
Very good and entertaining movie. Learned some things about Russians in Germany during the war I didn't know before.
very good movie
Beneath the brutality and dramatic story line, there is a poetic resonance that comes through in the gazing without speaking, not just from the major characters, but the people as a group surviving in the taiga. I am missing the arctic, and the land came through in this film as a presence that reached me in my lonliness. This film connected me to the snow in a way that my memories were not able to do.
a gem of Russian cinema! fine performances, good story and action, the real stars are the train and of course the Russian Bear lol thanx fandor
I saw this movie over a year ago and have never forgotten it so was happy to find it here. What they accomplish at the bridge is amazing cinematography and stunt skills
