Krzysztof Kieślowski's international breakthrough remains one of his most beloved films, a ravishing, mysterious rumination on identity, love and human intuition. Irène Jacob is incandescent as both Weronika, a Polish choir soprano, and her double, Véronique, a French music teacher. Though unknown to each other, the two women share an enigmatic, emotional bond, which Kieślowski details in gorgeous reflections, colors and movements. Aided by Slawomir Idziak’s shimmering cinematography and Zbigniew Preisner's haunting, operatic score, Kieślowski creates one of cinema's most purely metaphysical works. THE DOUBLE LIFE OF VÉRONIQUE is an unforgettable symphony of feeling.

Very seductive and sensual masterpiece. The acting is superb, the psychedelic cinematography is a trip by itself.

Is it a burden or a blessing to have a universal twin? The way a myth tells about deities, who never really die, the twins are each vessels of love and beauty, and also muses. Instead of reincarnation and karma, in this film the identity, name and visage of a beautiful woman is meant to carry out the same task of lover and object of desire. This state of being, and the knowledge that she is not a single entity or unique is a predicament, and somehow painful. (Is that narcissism of the gods, or a longing for the other half?) Like the immortals of myth, she is not meant to traverse any human trial or tribulation, but only hold up to her own magic and destiny.

Kieslowski and the invisible, what's this about??? just 5 stars?

Brilliant cinematography wasted on egregious, pretentious nonsense.

Cryptic, sexy, visually arresting. The singer's voice is dubbed, but you can't tell. It's the diva Elżbieta Towarnicka, and she is a thing of wonder.

Pretentious emptiness, complete waste of time.

helped sustain life for another day . . .

This is not a literary film. It has no plot that is of any relevance. It is an impressionistic film not meant to be given to a literary narrative. The main vehicle of impression are the facial expressions of Veronique. They constitute a bouquet of emotions against a panorama of mysteries. Disjoint scenes somehow blend into an organic but not a mechanical whole. My partner said it made no sense. This was kind of like saying that an impressionist painting lacked clarity. A philosopher might say that identity I context specific. We are different people in different settings striving for a unity we can never have. We have to let it go to see who we are.
