The Blob1958

A cult classic of gooey greatness, THE BLOB follows the havoc wreaked on a small town by an outer-space monster with neither soul nor vertebrae, with Steve McQueen playing the rebel teen who tries to warn the residents about the jellylike invader. Strong performances and ingenious special effects help THE BLOB transcend the schlock sci-fi and youth delinquency genres from which it originates. Made outside of Hollywood by a maverick film distributor and a crew whose credits mostly comprised religious and educational shorts, THE BLOB helped launch the careers of McQueen and composer Burt Bacharach, whose bouncy title song is just one of this film's many unexpected pleasures.

Among the low-budget jalopies that crashed and burned at the Drive-In in the 1950's, this is a true Hot Rod, a wild, Technicolor joyride full of inventiveness and imagination. Yeah, it's Steve McQueen's first movie, but he's not Steve McQueen yet (McQueen looks about as much like a teenager as Edward R. Murrow), while his co-star, Aneta Coursault would achieve pop culture immortality just a few years later as "Helen Crump" on the Andy Griffith show. Cherry on top is Burt Bachrach's swinging' theme, which takes a cue from "Tequila" by The Champs. Beware of the Blob. Five decades later, it's still out there, eating movie theatres.

3 ½ The red day-glow, made-for-Technicolor blob is still scary after almost 60 years, but when it’s not menacing town folk, things drag and the dialogue sometimes made me cringe. It’s almost physically uncomfortable watching McQueen play an awkward teen about half his age. Still, one of the scariest blobs ever (the scariest being Bava’s black and white Caltiki, the Immortal Monster) and great fun for nostalgia and old horror fans.

A corny classic. Very cutting edge in it's day.

Steve McQueen, Burt Bacharach, and pink goo. Yup, that was a... movie? There were at least pictures flying by sequentially at a rate of roughly 24 frames per second. That is indisputable. Okay, I'm not being fair. There are some things to like about The Blob. They manage to wring a few WTF moments out of the way they use that amorphous goo. A few, no more no less. The most enjoyable thing about this movie, outside of its completely oddball sense of small town American life, is watching the budding star quality of a young and untested Steve McQueen. Just keep in mind that he was nearly thirty when he shot this and he's meant to be playing a seventeen year old kid. As awkward and naïve as he tries to be, he's still a little too... well, Steve McQueen. I thought to myself several times, "This kid is way cooler than he should be."

Wonderful. I had missed this film 60 years ago, but tonight I saw the whole thing. Yeah, I know, I was being manipulated and lead astray and there were plenty of slow downs to put an edge on my anxiety, and yes it was only a film, but I enjoyed the whole thing. Plenty of stereotypes, lots of stupid people and bad communication, but it all works. And the last line in the film " it's dumped now in the acetic and that's ok, as long as the arctic stays cold." (or something like that.) Global warming. A blast from the past. The only thing I missed tonight was the popcorn. Steven did good.

1950's monster movie about a jelly-like blob that falls from space and tries to devour a small, all-white, "typical" American town.

'The Blob' is burdened with too much dialogue! The scenes with the blob are actually pretty intense and well-done, and there are some creepy shots to heighten the tension when the blob is stalking its next unsuspecting victim. The film seems kind of bland outside of those shots. Steve McQueen has moments of brilliance, but they seem out of character with the films campy nature, and he seems nearly overqualified at times (especially considering he's playing a character fifteen years his junior). The music's real good, and the theme song is GROOVY. Overall, it's not good enough to be great, and not bad enough to be good either.

great

The best word to describe The Blob is charming. As I'm closer to the age of the character of Steve Andrews than the actor Steve Mcqueen was during filming, I'm looking back on this movie without any nostalgia. Still the movie holds up with its likeable characters, impressive effects and witty dialogue. The plot is a simple creature feature, but it's really more about the "teens" and their vain attempts to warn the town of the monster attack. Sci-fi and horror elements are blended together well. I can see why this film has had such a lasting impact on pop culture. With only $240,000 and lacking even a hint of cynicism, The Blob is a classic in my book.

It was so much scarier the first time I saw it.
