The Art of Haiti1982

  • 3.9
An award winning documentary film about the absorbing art movement that has emerged from the rage, poverty and passion of Haiti. The film juxtaposes images from everyday life with the radiant works of twelve painters and includes interviews with renowned artists Philome Obin and Rigaud Benoit. THE ART OF HAITI delves into the roots of Haitian art in the everyday life, history and culture. The uneasy co-existence of Christian and Vodoun beliefs are explored through detailed retrospectives of artists influenced by the Vodoun religion such as Hector Hyppolite and Andre Pierre. The documentary also serves as a permanent record of the beautiful murals of the Catherale Sainte Trinite in Port-au-Prince, filmed years before the church was destroyed during the earthquake of 2010.

The Art of Haiti is exceptional in its visuals and attention to historical context -- biographical in the case of artists, as well as institutional and social. Inspiring and heartbreaking at the same time, given the damage from the earthquake in 2010. Viva l'esprit d'Haiti!
