What a fantastic piece on the working musician. Taken into the life of Goh and seeing all the up and downs of what he goes through to make a living in his craft really hit home. A cool balance of music and interesting characters that made every moment special and worth watching.

Surrogate Valentine is a lo-fi comedy about the doldrums of being an indie musician. Goh Nakamura plays himself, a guitar wielding artist with the temperament of a snuffed out cigarette. Fettered to his side is a wonky actor (Chadd Stoops) who seeks Goh's tutelage in order to properly prepare for his newest role as a struggling musician.

The odd couple formula - Stoop's doing his best Johnny Knoxville impersonation and Goh playing a virtual rain cloud - works significantly better than it should. A notch better than Destin Cretton's "I Am Not a Hipster," Surrogate Valentine is worth a view for those with interest in minimalist comedies.
