"...a strikingly unsentimental study in female friendship between unmoored souls in L.A.'s bleached, glamour-challenged San Fernando Valley." - Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly

A very gentle and forgiving movie about ungentle and unforgiving things. It creates and maintains astonishing and non-verbal relationships that last the entire movie. Close contacts are created and maintained with none of the usual tricks of eye contacts and long conversations.

I appreciate the films casual inclusion of raw sex in the plot, without going Hollywood, where profound, ecstatic music reiterates the sex act, the camera is zoomed as close as possible, and everything reeks emotionally of sleaze and bottom feeders. Well acted and as professionally polished as mainstream, heavily financed cinema. I also enjoyed the California scenery, arid land, many hills of crumbling stone, and views to the horizon. I'd like to see other films by Sean Baker, if there are any.

Greatly enjoyed this film. Characters were quite believable. I found myself deeply invested in the story and engaged with each of the characters, even the ones I found revolting.

The casting, performances, and directing are first class. There were characters I loved, some I easily dismissed, some I detested. I cared what was going on, I wanted to know how things would turn out. Silence and quiet pauses were very well used. Funny that money, which once loomed so important ended up not important at all. Sadie was the most beautiful person in the film. Elegant performance.

First of all, this movie has Manuel Ferrara and Asa Akira in it, which is kind of hilarious. It's also quite good. Wasn't quite sure what to expect going in, but I was pleasantly suprised. Watch it!

I enjoyed this film. This is something very different. Not the typical female odd couple bonding film. It feels like a Gus Van Zant picture. This film draws you in and you almost feel guilty nosing into their business. Well acted, well done movie.

This is rather flawless filmmaking. I was captured from beginning to end. Excellent acting, phenomenal script and perfectly directed and shot. Very natural, very real acting and a thick slice of the grim American landscape, this is a rather brilliant marriage of two soulless souls (and a sweet pup) reinventing their hearts and foraging a new family. This is nicely done, with no artificial sweeteners.

Ennui reigns in this valley flick, and our heroine, though an import like anyone in LA, quickly learns how to maximize the effect. Life is an opium den, but Jane attempts to free herself from the clutches of the city's dark fortune by forming an unusual friendship. With a lo-fi feel and characters that are tangible waifs, LA comes alive, and dies, before our eyes.

Solid film. Very well made and acted. Glad I watched it. That said, I never believed Jane's job as a porn star and felt her character wasn't nearly as fleshed out as it could have been. Opportunity missed. Why give her that job if it ultimately doesn't matter? It didn't inform her character at all. The film was definitely told from a male's perspective. I wish I could see this kind of film from a woman writer-director.

I certainly didn't find any great noble truths in this film. It was watchable. At times fun, at times erotic, at times confusing, and at times a waste of time.

Quirky little movie about ordinary people going nowhere special. Interesting characters and very good acting.

love watching Dree Hemingway_totally beautiful

A nicely done film with a nice emphasis on the relationship between the two main characters. While the two brief but explicit sex scenes did work I feel it unfortunately narrowed the viewing audience.

Good story line. Thought the acting was good

Deals with the adult industry in an honest (seeming) way which is to say without overly dramatizing it. This is a small part of the movie but effectively done, which makes sense given how Baker deals with transexual hookers in as honest a way in Tangerine. The movie does sneak up on you and is quite affecting in the end.. another winner from Baker (I saw Tangerine first)

Excellent film. Definitely recommend this film. Great introduction to a terrific new actress.

not good movies

Left me sad but realizing one of the very main things in life is to be kind and not a horrible person like the one who wrecked it all. I highly recommend this movie.

Good, but not good enough to be this long! Needs editing.

different

Unexpectedly Brilliant

The friendship of Jane & Sadie isn't improbable, but it's overly simple. It lacks detail of the sort portrayed in Starlet's day with Sadie and Sadie's disappearance. Why does Sadie decide to go to Paris with Jane after she's unpacked her things? The deceased daughter discovered through the cemetery marker functions as a facile explanation of the friendship rather than show the development of the relationship.

I think there's more here than a flimsy plot twist that explains the movie. Jane is very self-contained, but confident, striding through life without fear and feeling totally in control. She believed her relationship with Sadie was her doing, that her usual hip, slick, cool act was keeping it going. The plot twist I see is Sadie revealing something very personal, revealing that she has trumped Jane's over confidence. Sadie HAS to go with Jane to Paris, demonstrating commitment to their relationship. It is an acceptance of what is, leaving us knowing that reconciliation takes place out of our sight.

fanatstic!!
