Something to Sing About1937

  • 4.0
Though one of Warner Brothers' most popular stars, James Cagney was often at odds with his studio, complaining that they worked him harder and paid him less than many smaller box-office names. Walking out during one contract dispute in 1938, he made two independent features, this one especially gratifying because it allowed him to show off his stage roots as a song-and-dance man. He plays a big-band leader who accepts an offer to "go Hollywood." but he and Tinseltown don't get along too well. The newcomer reacts negatively to the glamour treatment and phony promotions until he finally walks out. While he's enjoying his freedom on a South Seas cruise, however, his movie is released and suddenly he's the biggest box-office sensation around. With its satire of the film industry and several soft-shoe interludes, SOMETHING TO SING ABOUT was one of Cagney's personal favorites. Playing his studio publicist here is William Frawley, later famous as Fred Mertz on I LOVE LUCY. In an odd coincidence, the original, non-stage name of Cagney's character is revealed to be McGillicuddy, the same as Lucy Ricardo's maiden name on that classic sitcom. Nominated for Best Music Score at the 1938 Academy Awards®. - Dennis Harvey

Occasionally delightful fluff, redeemed by the ever charismatic and watchable Cagney.

very entertaining,james cagney always good!

I really enjoyed watching James Cagney dance and sing.

Good entertainment. This was a time when actors/actresses had to be a triple threat. Able to act, sing and dance. and that Cagney could do.
