Ground control has been receiving mysterious transmissions from the three remaining residents of the Solaris space station. When cosmonaut and psychologist Kris Kelvin is dispatched to investigate, he experiences the same strange phenomena that afflict the Solaris crew, sending him on a voyage into the darkest recesses of his consciousness. With SOLARIS, the legendary Russian filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky created a brilliantly original science-fiction epic that challenges our conceptions about love, truth and humanity itself.

Not merely one of the all-time greatest spaceship films, this is another plunge into the murky waters of the subconscious with Andrei Tarkovsky, one of cinema's greatest. Like all of his films, multiple viewings are required.

Lamentably, I believe I yet lack the patience for Tarkovsky. Playing more like a guided meditation on the nature of perception and the various scars that we assemble into our identities than any sort of genre piece, I found Solaris to be perhaps the quietest, least grandiose Science Fiction Epic of all time. Gorgeously lyrical and contemplative as it was, Solaris was also a cinematographically bland and ponderously slow navel-gazing on every remotely interesting thought Tarkovsky had while crafting the (admittedly, poetic) screenplay, which clocks in just under three hours. Ultimately, it's worth the watch for the writing and acting, but if you are not compelled by this film, I doubt seriously that you will be able to finish it. I, for instance, could not complete my second watch this year. Four stars for sheer craft, but I do not think this is a five star movie.

Just as beautiful and mysterious as it was upon my first viewing 40 years ago. Although considered an overly long film back in the day it seemed to flow even better now. We are fortunate to have these films of Tarkovsy to ponder today. Several scenes stay in the memory and may seem incongruous at first viewing but I feel it all fits together and wouldn't change anything. A Sci-fi masterpiece with no explosions but with a silver box.

Andrei Tarkovsky's Solaris (1972) is a sci-fi film with a rather improbable storyline. Yet, it is a well thought film, with a "tight" screenplay, and has good entertainment value. Some aspects of the film are more paranormal than sci-fi but, overall, it was an enjoyable film viewing experience for me.
