Sheba, Baby1975

  • 3.4
Fresh off her career defining roles for Jack Hill in COFFY and FOXY BROWN, Pam Grier returned to pure Blaxploitation (after turns in Blaxploitation-horror and action), in cult filmmaker William Girdler's SHEBA, BABY. Pam Grier plays Sheba Shayne, a private eye based in Chicago who is called to her hometown to stop the local mob boss from moving in on her father's loan business. Aided by her father's partner, Brick Williams, Sheba finds out that the violent thugs aren't going away without a fight. Car bombs, gun fights and boat chases ensue whilst armed with her curves, street smarts and a .44, Sheba is in for a bloodbath. Pam Grier would appear in three Blaxploitation classics in 1975 (the others were BUCKTOWN and FRIDAY FOSTER), where she was at the top of her game and genre, cementing her status as the first female action star.

I always considered myself something of a Blaxploitation fan but the further removed we are from the 70s the more that genre loses its shine for me. Where I previously enjoyed the cutting edge characters and hip dialogue, I now find the writing often jarring.

And at a time when nobody gives a damn about whether a main character is female or black or even a black female anymore, the only radical thing that sticks out with SHEBA, BABY is the decision to make their heroes belong to a family of friendly loan sharks. Come again? Yep, that sure must be something of a first.

Other than that the acting is bordering between the plain bad and the utterly ridiculous. And unfortunately that includes the otherwise lovely Pam Grier who just sounds flat and unconvincing with everything she says and at no time ever looks like a genuine threat to anyone. Some of the supporting players just appear to be standing or sitting around staring into space not knowing what to do.

The soundtrack, however, is superb as well as Pam Grier's costume design but the film could have been so much better with such a small bit extra effort on everyone's part.

Not Pam's best work but she looks great and knocks em dead! Funky soundtrack and predictable villains.

In a just world Pam Grier would have been James Bond. Beautiful actors well filmed. This American International picture holds up well as it fast approaches fifty years old.
