Disappointed to see Burnett's work getting such low ratings from the Fandor community, he's a giant of Black American cinema and his work is some of the most valuable on this site. Like Eagle Pennell, the dialogue feels too real to be scripted yet too good to be improvised. The story here is bare bones but the atmosphere is immersive. Very few filmmakers are as skilled as Burnett at capturing a place and time, he's a poet of the everyday - his mastery of cinematic lyricism is apparent even in this very early work.

For the people who lived it, this is their story, for the rest of us it's an opportunity to be transported somewhere new.
