Despite its contemporary, 1990’s setting, “Savior of Souls” is an old-fashioned fantasy adventure. It’s really a love story with breaks for action scenes. When the action comes, you get your money’s worth—kicks, leaps, swords, guns, explosions. Wham-o! This film offers an excellent example of the innovations in the look and pace of action films coming out of Hong Kong in the 80’s and 90’s that influenced the action genre on a world-wide scale.

If you're nostalgic for the 90's, especially the neon-flushed, highly stylized 90's of East Asia, this film is for you. There are some stellar action scenes, the standard in pretty much any Chinese movie. This HK flick is unabashedly melodramatic with a campy plotline and a couple of instances of charmingly bad CGI. If anything, watch it to see two Heavenly Kings of Hong Kong: the singer/actors Andy Lau and Aaron Kwok. Amazingly, the usually much more too-cool-for-you auteur Wong Kar-Wai co-wrote the screenplay for this film--I bet you can tell which parts. Behind all the entertaining tacky wackiness, there's soul here.
