Samoyed Boy1928

  • 4.5
Man's best friend proves even more valuable amidst the perils of the Frozen North in this beautiful animated Soviet adventure designed in the timeless style of woodcuts. Far from a simple folk tale, however, it goes on to show "boy" hero Chu shaking off his frigid village's primitive, superstitious ways for post-Revolutionary education: "Samoyed Boy: he's no fool! Went to worker's college too!" - Dennis Harvey

A beautiful short animated film by an early Soviet master. It's also poignant since, as it's a propaganda film, one wonders how many happy boys saw it, then left a challenging but mostly happy life to live the likely grim life of a early 20th century Soviet socialist. I recommend viewing this film in conjunction with Werner Herzog's "Happy People: A Year in the Taiga."
