It took a while but I finally was able to sit down and experience Khavn's. "Ruined Heart..." As far as plot goes, he tells you everything with the film's title. This is a story I have all seen in too many movies that can be counted. The thing is that Khavn finds a whole new way to tell the story.
His attentions are on music, visuals and atmosphere. "The story" is never clearly spoken and it may not even be linear or literal. Harnessing some amazing music and musical performances -- German / French band, Stereo Total, really stand out here -- and Christopher Doyle's cinematography is brilliant and freshly hypnotic as always.
The actors have very little to no lines to speak and all manage to convey what is needed. Tadanobu Asano really steps up for the film. His on-screen charisma plays a crucial role in advancing the film.
The entire production of artists both in front of and behind the camera are in perfect synch with the director.
I've not seen a film this casually cool since Olivier Assayas' "Irma Vep." Like that 1990's French film, Khavn's "Ruined Heart" never feels like it is trying to be cool. It quite simply doesn't care. This oft-told story of a criminal and a whore in love and on the lam is moving forward with or without you. Khavn has made a movie that is cool simply because it is.

A showcase for master cinematographer Christopher Doyle. With images like this, who needs a story or words? It hasn't got any. Subs are there for the lyrics to the amazing soundtrack. Frame rate: 24 MPS (24 masterpieces per second). See it on the big screen or plug your computer into a good projector, please!
Incomprehensible gibberish.
breathtaking . . .
Not a story, but a disjointed frenzy of moments in the hedonistic, violent lives of two lovers, a gangster and a hooker, in the slums of Manila. With Christopher Doyle behind the camera, every image is stunning, even the many moments of ugliness. The chase scenes in the slum alleys are especially thrilling. Even more so than earlier Wang Kar-wai, impression and mood are what are important here, and the mood is definitely, “Live fast; die young”. The two leads have a bonded chemistry, even absent any dialogue. Their sweet, handholding romance contrasts so sharply with their corrupt, dangerous lives. The eclectic soundtrack matches the images perfectly. Full of visceral imagery of blood, cum and vomit, watching this is a bit like eating balut, but is also headily exhilarating and life-affirming, and I was so deeply moved that I immediately had to rewatch it. I just loved this movie!
love it supercool film great soundtrack love the whore (Nathalia Acevedo) everyone actually_the world is a poem so is this film_great cinematography_a super pleasure_i'll watch it again_it just moves so well_a super trip !!!
Yes it's cinematography is lush but with it's bereft of a plot so ultimately it outlives its promise.
Style without substance can only be engaging in small portions. Trying to shape this into a feature length when it's more suited to a much shorter duration only waters it down and induces boredom long before the final credits.
"World is Poem; Poem is the world"
Whenever I'm not watching this film, I'm thinking about it. This is breath-taking, jaw-dropping, heart-breaking. I cannot adequately what a marvel this film is. A gorgeous transgressive nightmare and at the same time a perceptively detailed evocation of precise places and times. Why aren't you watching this already? :-)
