“Rat Pfink a Boo Boo” is the psychotronic “Citizen Kane,” a no-budget, 16mm comic book with a clinical case of screenplay schizophrenia. It starts off as a pulpy, black and white, psycho-sexual exploitation thriller, edging towards realm of a Doris Wishman roughie. Then, at around the 37-minute mark--SCREEECH! The movie makes a crazed U-Turn into Wackyville: slapstick fights and superheroes wearing cheap Ski Masks from Sears-Roebuck. Biff! Bang! Pow! Ray Dennis Steckler was working without a net, improvising the story as he went, creating something ludicrous yet wonderful. Add Rockabilly unknown and porno ghostwriter Ron Haydock as the hero, looking somewhat awkward and out-of-date on the streets of Go-Go Hollywood of 1966. All bad movies should be this good!
Trivia time. “Kogar” is none other than the legendary Bob Burns, the hardest working gorilla in show business.

Absurd, embarrassingly bad, puts the 'low' in low budget!!! A real treat for fans of low budget fare and really bad movies! It starts out as a stalker flick with a dumb, deserves-to-die chick walking alone at night on a deserted street. It then becomes a teen-rock & roll musical (?) and then sinks to a super hero adventure film. The dialog is corny, the music is lip-synched badly, the acting totally non-existent and the plot...well, lets just say there is a plot and leave it at that! The title was supposed to be "Rat Phink and Boo Boo" but apparently there was no room left in the budget to make the correction. I enjoyed it but then, I like "Plan B From Outer Space"!!!

I rarely find a film that wets my whistle in the way that this has. There are a lot of elements to appreciate. It's full of bad-ass exploitation moments. For example, there's a painfully long scene depicting a perverse, chain-wielding fiend stalking a damsel in distress in broad daylight, all set to 70s surf rock with an extremely satisfying amount of white denim. It makes a sudden shift two thirds through the movie from campy thriller to full blown spoof. It's hard to tell if this was planned all along or if it was just a decision made on set that day. Whatever the case, it's very silly in a good way and the overall style is genuinely cool.
Funny. Raises questions: Was this film shown in theaters? Drive-Ins? It seemed like something a bunch of college kids would put together over summer vacation. Cheap, amateurish, but gets a few laughs decades later.
A terrible film, BUT, oh, so worth watching just to loo0k at the styles and LA in 1961 !!!
After Kogar was put to sleep, Boo Boo entered the porn industry. This movie is fair.
There are certain, uh, films you love because they even exist -- despite their apparent shortcomings, and this is one.* Actually, reading about Ray Dennis Steckler movies in RE/Search is a lot more interesting than most of the films themselves, but it could be Steckler's an acquired taste not unlike Andy Milligan's cinematic self-abasement (or its drive-in equivalent, see also Pat Boyette's extremely rare Dungeon of Harrow, also on Fandor right now!).
*Same feels for RDE's "Incredibly Strange Creatures That Stopped Living and Became Mixed Up Zombies," which has more interesting weirdness (and is ALSO playing on Fandor right now! Yay!)
