also known as The Pleasure of Love in Iran
Plaisir d'amour en Iran1976
How can you talk about love when you're looking at a mosque or talk about architecture in bed? This short film is a variation on the amorous outpourings of Pomme and Ali Darius (in ONE SINGS, THE OTHER DOESN'T) but it could also be any couple's dream in such an ideal setting as the Imam Mosque in Esfahan, where secular art meets religious art.

"The crossroads between sacred and profane art."

This film is beautiful because it's love disarms. Varda presents us a moment in which two lovers open themselves up to expression, poetry, architecture, religion and feeling comfort in a foreign place for the sake of experiencing pleasure. Our inclusion in their happiness makes it seem profane to question the morality of what they're up to, especially because they invite us to be happy, too.

The narration is poetic and mature. The complexity of Iranian architecture combined with sensual script is epic.
