Jean Cocteau's update of the Orpheus myth depicts a famous poet, scorned by the Left Bank youth, and his love for both his wife, Eurydice, and a mysterious princess. Seeking inspiration, the poet follows the princess from the world of the living to the land of the dead, through Cocteau's famous mirrored portal. ORPHEUS's peerless visual poetry and dreamlike storytelling represent the legendary Cocteau at the height of his powers.

If you love Cocteau's "La Belle et La Bete," then you'll like "Orpheus" as well. There's the same dreamy and surreal atmosphere and mood. "Orpheus" is a modern retelling of the Greek myth. In the film, Orpheus is a famed poet who gets involved with a mysterious princess, who is actually Death, and her biker gang. He's intrigued by Death and pursues her, despite his pregnant wife, who dies. Orpheus must then use his knowledge of Death to try and save his wife. Cocteau's retelling is very creative and inventive, with cool special effects. In the film, Death travels through mirrors, and behind the mirrors lie this desolate town, which looks like Cocteau actually filmed it at bombed locations. All the actors give very strong performances, especially Jean Marais. Overall, I prefer "La Belle et La Bete," but I enjoyed "Orpheus" and would watch it again. Highly recommend for fans of the surreal, poetic, beautiful, and moody!

Cocteau predicted his own immortality, and correctly so. Just check his filmography; most of his work was made after he left his earthly body and moved on to poet's heaven.

~~~ full of wonder & transcendent ~~~~
Great visuals presented in a playful, artistic style. In addition to the film's dramatic power, there are a few great elements of creative horror and science fiction.
wonderous images, long before virtual reality !
