A remarkable vision of a city, Sao Paulo, remarkably visualized in constrained, at times constricted, cinematography that matches the restrained, pitifully restricted expression of characters in this movie's look into an urban past of brutal suppression. Suppression, in its multiple hideousness, that has yielded automatic repression, a repression that informs the rigid geometries of the built city as well as the camera's composed images. Whereas other directors might have invoked an operatic hysteria, whereas certain critics have blamed the movie's strictness, Gregório Graziosi has elected a black-and-white grid ascended only in the clouds of a church ceiling.
