Niagara Falls1897

  • 3.5
Roaming far from home, the brothers Lumière gave less mobile viewers a chance to glimpse one of the world's most fabled sights in this very early miniature. It provides a topside view of two among the three spectacular falls on the U.S./Canada border, with spectators visible on an undeveloped overlook between them. Niagara's fame as a honeymooning tourist destination was the result of publicity campaign launched after the Civil War by an American railroad company offering service to the area. - Dennis Harvey

Striking composition in this 1897 short film which was shot at Niagra Falls. The audience almost fills with trepidation watching the onlookers walk to the tip of the ledge to catch a glimpse of the waterfall. This film illustrates the overwhelming power of nature and our utter fascination with it.

Nice to see the auld home towne before it all got paved over.
