My Fair Son2009

  • 3.2
From ground-breaking gay Chinese filmmaker Cui Zi’en comes a tender and touching tale about a father and son trying to reconcile their separate lives. Ray, a tall, thin and handsome young man, returns to live with his father after having grown up with his grandfather. He is disconnected and angry over his father’s middle class lifestyle and hard-line ways. Ray enrolls in art school where he makes new friends and starts a relationship with another student. One morning, Dad discovers the two young men naked in bed and, after being surprised, must begin to understand his own feelings toward homosexuality. Then Ray meets Bo, one of his dad’s top employees. From the start, sparks fly and Ray falls in love. But Bo is to be married. How will the two connect and what will Ray’s father think? Brilliantly shot, this art house film shows gay life in China in a different light than ever before.

How the heck did this video make it to Fandor? I can understand if it was released on youtube. It was poorly shot and perhaps worse edited. The only saving grace was the performance . It does ring of Dogme 95, but even those creations, like celebration, we're really engaging. This engaged me because I'm attracted to Asian guys. The wandering camera was unecessary but i did understand it was part of the style throughout: i didn't like the style. Also, what the hell happened to the sound editing? It sounded so poor, and there were no proper sound bridges between cuts. I found it novel that a movie of a homemade quality such as this was picked up by Fandor, perhaps because no one really makes gay films in China. But really, why couldn't they have gotten a nice camera or at least color corrected the damn thing. Perhaps the film should have been called Raw cause it certainly looked and sounded unprocessed. And yet, despite my misgivings for the film, I watched the whole damn thing, so shame on me.

though the movie was slow, i found it a nice break from my fast-paced life. Interesting character development, sexy bodies. I don't think you need to understand Chinese life to get this film. Too bad everyone is so busy, that few will get to watching and appreciating a film like this...

Lots of conflict.

Too much brooding without motivation. The cinematography fit the tone of the film, as did the editing and music, but I found it difficult to relate to the characters, not because I do not grasp Chinese culture and the problems a gay man has within it, but because the script only dealt with surfaces.

Really liked the film.

Although I have not been in China and do not understand Chinese customs I thought it was a very good movie. I guess unless we know Chinese customs can we understand the movie.

I thought My Fair Son was boring and slow. It was confusing at times and the message the director was trying to get across was oftentimes lost. I felt the filming was poor and the quality substandard.

Movie was well photographed and the characters were slowly developed and their story was lost to me in the slowness of the plot.

A nice film

sad and confusing
