My Breakfast with Blassie1983

  • 3.7
In characteristic Andy Kaufman style, he and professional wrestler "Classy" Freddie Blassie run a parody of MY DINNER WITH ANDRE in this hilarious film. Kaufman and Blassie have discussions over the minutia that is their lives, including wrestling, stardom, hygiene and whether to eat bacon or sausage. Though shot on video in the early 1980s (giving the production a rather washed-out look), the remarkable absurdity of the material renders the visual quality somewhat irrelevant.

Hysterical! For any Kaufman fan, it is legendary. Kaufman and Blassie's conversation captures comic genius in the macho-50's chauvinistic terms and delivery from Blassie (unintentionally). It is reminiscent of the Jerry Lawler/David Letterman bit. Zmuda is absolutely hysterical - almost as funny as Blassie's reaction. A must see for any Kaufman Fan.

A funny film that highlights the strange humor of Andy Kaufman. Though I like his tricks and treats, it is Blassie that made me laugh the hardest. The way that he was so disgusted with the way that the world works is hilarious. His reactions to Kaufman not doing things the way Blassie wants him to do them (like putting water on a dry towel) and Zmuda's interruptions are what make this such gold. Very enjoyable.

Seeing and hearing these two great minds speak candidly over breakfast at Sambo's restaurant is not merely edifying, it is mind-boggling. They inspire awe in the heart of anyone who aspires to greatness.

"Have you read the latest article on herpes? Christ. It's terrible. Terrible."

Meek eccentricity meets baritone machismo. Andy Kaufman stares like an aloof baby as Fred Blassie snarls, groans, affixes alpha male principles to his meal ordering. This is the type of melting tape deck humor that Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim would love.

I absolutely love these two characters. So raw. Andy left us way too soon.

The genius of Kaufman is really debateable. Mocking easy targets is soporific at best. How long could the world have tolerated this wiseguy? Obviously he knew he would have to fake his own death...and then fate stepped in and handled it instead.

@Uncle Bob, I understand your point, but personally I do not enjoy Kaufman's skill with passive agressively mocking others. It's abusive. He has incredible luck at selecting targets who aren't as sharp as he is, in detecting his mean streak. Looks like his luck ran out along the way when people started beat the snot out of him.

as funny as a rubber banana..

Tara O., you are maybe too young to have seen Kaufman within the context of his time? His career started with miming the Mighty Mouse theme, reading The Great Gatsby, and other onstage outrages that were well outside the sphere of "acceptable" show-biz comedy. He expanded the "acceptable" in ways that were certainly NOT easy. His participation in this no-budget, shot on video "for fun" project is one of the few true documents of who he was that we have, and it's infinitely more worthy than his only multimillion dollar Hollywood vehicle, the execrable robot love tale "Heartbeeps."

brill, watch it.

andy is cool

It was basically a conversation, that was normal, until odd circumstances popped up later. It's worth a look! :D
