Muybridge and the First Movies1979

  • 3.9
This DIY tribute from amateur filmmaker Ephraim Horowitz positively hums with enthusiasm for the movie medium, whose so-called "father," Eadweard Muybridge, worked out its rudiments in fascinating ways. Biographical points of Muybridge interest include: photographing the Modoc War, shooting and killing his wife's suspected lover and showing up countless painters who'd gotten it wrong about how horses gallop. Horowitz's commemoration is but one of many cinematic Muybridge appreciation pieces yet singular in its personal vitality. Clearly, touchingly, his hat is off to all those pioneers who soldiered through the laborious procedures of early photographic technology. - Jonathan Kiefer
