Meteor and Shadow1985

  • 2.8
A poignant and harrowing account of the rise and fall of Napoleon Lapathiotis, Greece's most esteemed poet. Acclaimed director Takis Spetsiotis conveys with sensitive daring finesse the poet's life as a romantic charmer, literary genius, communist sympathizer, depraved drug addict and, most importantly, as a national icon whose openly gay lifestyle created a scandal in conservative Athenian society. Winner of four awards, including Best Actor at the 1985 Thessaloniki Film Festival, METEOR AND SHADOW is a moving and visually striking decent into the horrors of troubled soul that speaks volumes on the complex and sometimes destructive relationship between an artist's personal life and his public creations.

A troubling film about a troubled poet. But aren't all poets troubled? Is that not the source of the poet's genius?

A little or actually very dry film, but the times were fragile in friendships and personal relationships to take a cautious view and thought process.

The life of a Greek upperclass gay poet through the decades from wealth to poverty.

He is a night owl with his friends and becomes interested in Communism and resigns from the church. Then his form of poetry becomes out of fashion and he is

very depressed. I've heard of Cavafy but not 'Napoleon' so I'm not sure how biographical it is.
