"The final KO of a brilliant cinematic one-two punch, Leos Carax’s follow-up to his gobsmacking feature debut, BOY MEETS GIRL (1984), proved this enfant terrible was no one-hit wonder." - David Fear, Time Out New York

I didn't expect much from this, and got far more than I bargained for. It reminds me quite a bit of the "Unbearable Lightness of Being". I thought the acting was fabulous, especially the young protagonist. It was confusing at times, and was a bit of a film noir, but it was captivating. Julie Delpy was a fun surprise. The costumes were excellent, and it paced well. I have no idea why it has not received better ratings. I think it is a 4+

Home-run of a movie! The protagonist, both an acrobat and a sleight-of-hand magician, is a wonderful actor, and Valois's willingness to let himself go, as with the actor's gymnastic-dance expression alongside a wall is an exceptional staging and performance, not at all like but functioning much the same as Garland's "Go Lose That Long Face" in "A Star is Born." Valois's evocations of Goddard, Truffaut are not all snobby and gracefully, forcefully enhance the movie-movie quality of this fine film.

Shades of Godard and Cocteau, with a little help from David Bowie :-)

I enjoyed this film, at times I found it confusing and slow, however the payoff was well worth waiting for, all in all a real good, captivating film.
