Love and Anarchy1973

  • 4.3
An epic tragicomedy from director Lina Wertmuller, LOVE AND ANARCHY plumbs the depths of fascist Italy from the perspective of a simple farm boy sent to kill Mussolini. Giancarlo Giannini won the best acting prize at the Cannes Film Festival for his achingly sensitive portrayal of Tunin, a freckle-faced innocent who became an accidental anarchist. His contact in Rome is Salomè (Mariangela Melato), a prostitute with her own sob story. While they prepare for the assassination, Tunin falls in love with Tripolina (Lina Polito), which threatens the entire operation. A film of operatic emotion and subversive comedy, LOVE AND ANARCHY is a powerful statement on the terror of fascism and the ignoble fates of those who challenged it.

I have'nt seen this since it was on ART screens, along with SWEPT AWAY, and 7 BEAUTIES. This film really holds up well. It's strong, simple, brutal honesty, and courageous beauty leave a mark. The eyes of Gianinni are messianic, seeing beyond Love and Death. This film was an influential politicaly articulate oracle, then and now. Rotunno, and Rota working thier magic once again to make this film a solid piece of work. I'm going to see it again in a couple of days.

Amazing. This is a pure classic. Well thought out, this film smacks of purity in the sense of playfulness, to truly be at one with art, its vibrant with awesomeness.

Wertmuller at her best. Fassbinder-worthy details and richness, fascinating, generous performances, and especially, a beautifully framed political point of view that brings you face to face with all the beauty and tragedy of her subject. Hilarious and heartbreaking, very thought provoking.

Love and Anarchy is a social political masterpiece that lives up to its titular promise delivering both anarchy and a beautiful love story. Gorgeously filmed, well acted, funny and touching. One of my favourite watches of this year.

In this story of a would-be assassin of Mussolini waylaid by love in a brothel, Wertmueller infuses a tragic tale with humor and humanity. A joy to watch; images and music worthy of Fellini at his best.

I saw this film when it first came out in the US (c.1975) & it has been with me ever since. I haven't seen it in years--for some reason it never appears among Wertmuller's DVD collections. Frankly, she could have stopped with this film, It is her best work.

A masterpiece! Everyone should see.

Like Fellinni's characters, Lina Wertmuller's have such interesting faces but Giancarlo Giannini's wide open eyes become distracting, making his acting too broad. Nevertheless, it's an interesting movie, if seen only once.

Not as good as I had anticipated.

2 hr Italian Comedy. Picks up steam, loses steam, picks up steam. Not my favorite but well done in acting and subtle to harsh comedy to harsh tragedy.

Very sad the last 30 minutes, the sound was off key and spoiled the movie.
